In reference to the article "Eminem's construction of authenticity" , rap is presented as the most dominant force in popular culture. The article uses an icon that is well known in this genre artist that goes by the name of Eminen. In this study it explores the distinctive elements of Eminem's gangsta rap. It goes in depth from the variety dimensions of Eminem's annunciations of authenticity through his words. In other words, it examines his lyrics content and responses to his interviews. Interesting fact that I found was that Dr.Dre only signed Eminem a recording contract because of his race and background. Reason being because he is white. Which brought out racism and judgements because he was white and was a rapper. According to the article, Eminem has repeatedly has been told to stop rapping because hes white from black rappers. Which in this case it comes to the attention that there is still racism and labeling on what race can do what. Eminem has been told his lyrics portray racial identity through his lyrics. Which caught my attention.

Eminem was a huge rapper when I was in high school. I remember when he fist came out into the mainstream it was kind of weird because he is white. I am white but I have always associated rap music with Black males. Eminem was authentic in the fact of his background. He was from the ghetto and his lyrics held truth and that is how he gained respect.
ReplyDeleteReally interesting, I had heard that Dr. Dre liked Eminem's mix-tape but he didn't know he was white until he flew to California to meet with him. I'm not a big fan of Eminem's music but his work is admirable, he is one of very few white rappers who have a successful career without using the word "nigga" in his music. he definitely broke the stereotype that only black people can rap and paved the way for other white rappers. . I know some amateur rap artists from different racial backgrounds and I've heard people criticize them saying things like "you have to be black to rap"
ReplyDeleteWow very interesting that he was subjected to racism from black rappers. We've been covering racism from the other end. I like that you mentioned that because it raises a good point. Racism occurs from the African American population as well as white.
