Regarding the qualitative paper . . .
I have now lowered the requirement so that you only have to find quotes for four of your five tables. If you do the qualitative analysis for the fifth table, I will add points to your score.
You still need to have at least 4 pages of your own writing, and an overall length of at least 5 pages.
Quotes should be at least 3 sentences/lines and less than 7 sentences /lines. Shorter quotes are OK to use, but you should use more of them.
Reminder: paper is due Nov 25.
To complete the analysis of structured transcripts, you don't need to import any files into nvivo -- you need to use the file "coded backup 2.nvp", in the same folder as the unstructured transcripts.
Detailed
instructions have already been posted below.
This is a restatement of the general steps to complete the qualitative
paper.
Introduction
– first 20% -- analysis of unstructured transcripts
Question to be answered:
“How do people talk about music, homelessness or inequality?”
(to be adjusted based on your
quantitative paper -- choose the topic that comprises most of your paper).
e..g.,
How do people talk about music?
How do people talk about music?
1. Start a new nvivo file and import the unstructured transcript that matches
the main topic in your quantitative paper.
2.
Run the 3 procedures – word frequency, hand
coding, and text search query.
3.
Describe the procedures and the output from these procedures.
Body – main
80% -- analysis of structured transcripts
Question to be answered:
What are the patterns of discussion that match the tables I
submitted for the quantitative paper?
More specifically, you will ask and answer a question such
as this:
How do specific demographic groups (e.g., gender [men/women],
race[e.g., Hispanic/White], education [e.g, high school, associates degree],
etc.) talk about music, or homelessness, or inequality? How do these patterns in talk relate to the
quantitative spss tables on the same topic?
(questions to be
adjusted based on your quantitative paper)
For example,
What are the differences between how women and men talk about homelessness and how does that relate to the tables I produced on this topic?
For example,
What are the differences between how women and men talk about homelessness and how does that relate to the tables I produced on this topic?
4.
Go to the dropbox folder where you found the
unstructured transcript. Download and open
the file “coded backup.nvp” This
contains the coded nvivo file you need to write this part of the paper.
5.
For each of the five tables in your quantitative
paper, run the 3 procedures – word frequency, hand coding, and text search
query.
6.
Describe the procedures and the output from these procedures.
When you present your quotes, make sure to clearly identify which category the quote is from (men/women, white/hispanic, etc). You will not get credit if you neglect this. This reference only applies for the body of the paper (you can't do this sort of reference with the unstructured data you describe in the instruction of the paper). You do not have to provide any other reference for the quotes.

Don't like NVIVO?

If you don't want to use Nvivo to complete the assignment, you can still submit a paper that describes the patterns in quotes among groups that relate to each of your tables. You can still answer the same two overall questions listed above. If you chose to not use Nvivo, you can attempt to answer the same questions and follow the instructions as close as possible , but instead of using the nvivo procedures, just do the qualitative analysis manually by reading the quotes in the following word files (will be completely updated on Nov 16),

You need to describe the procedures you used to find quotes. This holds true for those that use nvivo and those that did not use nvivo. This is important. See the example for the ideal.
The assignment assumes you will use Nvivo. If you choose to do the assignment without Nvivo, the best score you can earn on the qualitative paper is an 80%.

Classroom Presentations / Quiz this week
Since we will be doing research presentations on homelessness and hunger next week, the regular classroom presentations where you lead discussion on the journal articles will require you to post to the blogsite, in the same way that we have done when we run an online class. The deadline for this post is extended to the end of the semester. I will also keep the quiz open for next week until the end of the semester.
