Sing a Song of Drug Use-Abuse: Four Decades of Drug
Lyrics in Popular Music-From the Sixties through the
Nineties
John Markert
The article Sing a Song of Drug Use-Abuse: Four Decades of Drug Lyrics in Popular Music-From the Sixties through the Nineties by John Markert was very interesting to read. However the article did have many facts to talk about in my presentation today. Yet the one fact that caught my eye was the method the researcher use to test his theory out. Thus the method he use was, first the primary source was International Lyrics Network and the on-line AMG Guide to music: 50 percent of the songs were identified using these sources the primary subject title search used drug name such as marijuana, dope, and crack etc. Also he used The International Lyrics Server was another source, as was The Green Book of Songs by Subject: The Thematic Guide to Popular Music, 4th edition (1995), lastly he used his own knowledge and his students. Thus I found it very interesting how he used his own students and himself for his research I think it was a good idea to use his students because it may have gave him more current answers to topic.
