For my second article I read "Sing a Song of Drug Use-Abuse" by John Market. The article explains how drug lyrics are presented in music. Market explains that drug lyrics reflect deviant social behavior. It was not until the sixties that drug lyrics became known. People argue that these song lyrics teach inappropriate social behavior. Songs are selected because the theme related to issues by people. Market presents a table in the article that reflects certain time periods of pros and cons of certain drugs in musical lyrics. The only drug that remained constant towards being Con was Heroin from 1960s to 1990s. It seems that in certain decades certain drugs were used as a good thing in musical lyrics while others were not.
I feel that drug usage in songs have become very popular in the sense that many songs talk about getting drunk or high and the experiences following. So it is interesting to see how this still applies to today's music in our world.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way because every time I listen to any new rap music it always has something about drugs. I feel that in the past it was more of a hidden message now its just so blunt and out there. I think of magic carpet ride. Its an iconic song but it was more of a hidden message.
DeleteI agree that drug usage in songs has become very popular now these days because if you look at who listens to that type of music you will realize that it is mostly teenagers who have had past experiences with alcohol and drug use. Your social behavior is deviant when being under the influence and since these rap music artist are our idols some people believe that by listening to this music and doing what it says they will be much cooler when in reality it is the opposite. But then again it depends on the person because there are times in which I listen to this kind of music and I am perfectly fine.
ReplyDeleteReading this short summary of the article made me think of drug use in the 60s and 70s. Certain drugs were okay to use because it was believed that they "freed the mind" and led to creativity, spirituality, and knowledge of ones true self. I think that a lot of the music that was created during that time led to great songs with hidden messages.
ReplyDeletePatricia Brambila: Music containing drug lyrics in them are very popular in today's music. Sadly, many artist try to idolize drugs and make it seem like it is an okay thing to do. But if you are strong minded this lyrics shoud not affect you in any way.
