Presentation - Jessica Urbano
I chose the articles "Unladylike Divas: Language, Gender, and Female Gangsta Rappers" by Jason D. Haugen and "Where My Girls At?: Negotiating Black Womanhood in Music Videos" by Rana A. Emerson. The articles have to do with African American women in the male dominated music industry.
Haugen focused on gendered identities of the gangsta raps performed by Black women rappers. He explains that these female rappers aren't what you consider "ladylike" they express a different form of femininity because of their use of profanity and songs about sex, drugs and crime. Haugen's findings is that women rappers have been given a "voice" to express themselves.
One of the findings in Emerson's article is if there are stereotypical notions towards Black womanhood being portrayed in the music videos. Her method "theoretical sampling" to sample 56 music videos that had Black women in them. She concluded that more research needed to be done on music videos and the portrayal of Black women in them.
