Your task will be to analyze patterns in quotes regarding music, homelessness, and inequality.
I will post full instructions after we talk about the project in class this week. We will also walk over to the social science lab this week to practice.
Your paper needs to be about 4-5 pages of your own writing to describe how you conducted the analysis, and a detailed description of the patterns you have uncovered. The full paper will probably be 6+ pages with all the quotes. It is expected that you will have about 5 quotes for the general analysis part (the part that is about 20% of the paper) and 3 quotes for each of your five tables (the part that is about 80% of your paper), so a typical paper will have about 20 quotes, each of which is at least 3 sentences/3 full lines (whichever is longer). Its fine if you want to include more quotes for a longer paper (if you want to do extra quotes, don't include longer quotes, just more of them).
At least 3/4 of the patterns you discuss must be related to the exact tables you produced in the quantitative paper you just submitted yesterday.
If you wrote about rap and Hispanics, the you want to find quotes from Hispanics talking about rap. If you have a table on folk and hispanics, but can't find any quotes from Hispanics, then you would need to talk about folk more generally without discussing race. This is definitely not preferable and if you jump to the conclusion that there is no data that relates to your table you almost always will be wrong, and in those cases your grade will be penalized. If you found table is on gender and homelessness, then you want to find quotes on homelessness from men and women and talk about patterns in how men talk and how women talk and how those patterns are different, and how those patterns relate to (support/contradict) the table from the quantitative paper. Basically, the most important job in this draft is to find patterns in the quotes for the groups and topics that you identified in your quantitative paper. Each of your 5 tables needs to have quotes from at least 3 different people. Present the quotes in 3 -7 sentences (please edit long quotes to include the best parts). Quotes should be indented and single spaced. If your quotes are short, then use more of them. Also, you should present about 1 page of analysis of the main topic you chose -- music, homelessness, inequality -- without reference to your tables, but in a more general way that shows your ability to find patterns in the quotes. This would account for 20% (up to 25%) of your paper where you discuss patterns in the data that are not directly related to the tables you submitted for the quantitative paper. We will practice finding patterns by conducting queries. You will need to use Nvivo to conduct queries of the data so you can find relevant patterns that tell us how people think about these topics.
