On September 16, 2014 I conducted a survey as a project for my Sociology of Popular Culture class. The survey consisted of both quantitative and qualitative data. The survey asked questions pertaining to interviewee's opinions on the topics of homelessness, police misconduct and social inequality. My interviewee was female interviewee who lives in Fresno County. She said that homelessness was somewhat of a problem and the cause was people relied too much on the government, furthermore she concluded that community service organizations should take primary responsible for reducing homelessness. During the open ended question my interviewee shared her opinion about homelessness. She stated that people rely too much on other people and they should rely on themselves for their live, and not on others income. She also said that some people ask for money when they don't really need it and they just take advantage of the generosity of others. She also shared a story about and encounter she had with a homeless person while on her way to Mexico. She said that a homeless man that looked crippled asked her for money and she gave him a bag of change she had, as she saw the man walking away he was no longer limping or appear crippled. She said it made her feel disappointed, she thought she was doing a good dead and the guy didn't really need the help. My interviewee said she has seen a homeless person once a week during the past year and she had given food/money to a homeless person more than once a month. She has had a face to face interaction with a homeless person at least once a year and she has mixed feelings about the interaction.
The second part of the interview dealt with music. My interviewee most often listens to music from cd. My interviewee was asked about her feelings toward different types of music. On a scale that ranged from like it very much to dislike it very much and don't know much about it. Like it very much: Rap. Like it: Gospel, Country, Latin Blues/R&B, Oldies Rock, Reggae and Easy Listening. Dislike it: New Age, Metal, Big Band, Contemporary Rock, Gothic, Opera, and Broadway. Don't know much about it: Folk, World, Classical, Bluegrass, and Jazz. On the open ended question she explained why she disliked certain types of music was because it didn't speak to her and she couldn't relate to it. She explained that she really liked underground rap because it was more meaningful and it related to her feelings.
On the crime and police questions interviewee said there was an area in her neighborhood where she would be afraid to walk at night. She said on occasion police stop people on the streets of her neighborhood/city for no good reason, use insulting language in her neighborhood/city, use excessive force on people in her neighborhood, as well as occasionally use excessive force. Also she said she had never been stopped on the street by police for no good reason and they've never used insulting language against her, as well as never used excessive force against her. Concluding she said that she had never seen an officer engage in any corrupt activity my interview got cut short because my phone died while conducting the interview. It was an interesting experience, conducting a survey is harder than I thought but with the recording I am able to address and correct any problems I had for future recordings.
