Meier

Kaitlin Meier

In my practice interview in class, we discussed some of the serious issues going on in our community such as; police, homelessness, economic inequality and hunger. We first went through the opening procedure introducing the survey. Our first topic of discussion was homelessness where the interviewee believed that homelessness in her community is somewhat serious. It is something she is around about once a week, but only comes in direct contact with about a couple times a year. While speaking freely she explained how she feels that some people rely too much on the government while others just don't have the means to create a life for themselves in our current government situation. She felt it wasn't necessarily one sided on who should take the blame for the problem of homelessness in the country.
For the second topic we discussed music. The interviewee typically listens to traditional radio more often than other music sources. Some of her more favorable music choices were country western, contemporary and oldies rock, and broadway. Her less favorable genres were metal, jazz and opera. Most notably she described how she really enjoys broadway music and going to see plays.
On the next topic of crime and police the interviewee answered that there are areas within a mile around her neighborhood that she would be afraid to walk alone at night. She believes that police stop people without good reason around her neighborhood fairly often while only on occasion in the city. Only on occasion does she believe they use insulting language against people, but that they never use excessive force. She has never seen police engage in corrupt activities, but believes corruption does occur on occasion.
Our fourth topic was on inequality. She was neutral as to saying inequality continues to exist because it benefits the rich and powerful. Although, she does believe the U.S. economic system provides everyone equal opportunity to succeed. In talking freely, she explained how she feels that people that work hard are more likely to be successful than those that don't work or get an education. However, she also believes that there are cases where people become rich and successful without having worked very hard.
Poverty being the next subject, the interviewee believed that welfare makes people work less than if it wasn't available and they prefer to live off of the government, but she doesn't believe it has anything to do with race.
The topic we finished on was about food and hunger. The interviewee has experienced going without eating or eating less than she felt she should because of money. She explained that this has to do with her current lifestyle. Class ended at this point and we closed out the interview.
