2nd Article Presentation for week of Nov. 10th

Chelsea Woodcock

I read "All the jazz: The success of jazz musicians in three metropolitan areas". The intent of this article was to evaluate the success of musicians in three areas (New York, New Orleans and San Fransisco) and what affected their success or non-success. They measured two types of success; economic and critical. Some of the dependent variables that were evaluated were income earned from music, and acknowledgement that the respondent's talent has been recognized. They found that location had a significant effect on the amount of money made; economic success. New York & New Orleans were greater than San Fransisco. Also, gender played some role. Males tended to make more than female artists. However, race had no significance on economic success. For critical success, once again location had a significant influence with New Orleans & New York were greater than San Fransisco. Gender, race and the various capitals (human, social and cultural) had no significant effect. The overall conclusion was that very few jazz musicians enjoyed much success.
