Yes [Y]
Thank you.  The survey has about 50 questions. It will take about 20 minutes, or more depending on how long you want to talk.  You are volunteering to help us hear the opinions of the community.  We are doing the survey as part of a class project in Sociology. The questions are on community issues such as opinions about music, police, homelessness, economic inequality, and hunger.  You can skip any questions, and stop at any time.  This anonymous interview is being recorded for research purposes.  We will compile and analyze all responses, and share the findings publicly.  Because ths is anonymous, please do not disclose your name or anything else that would expose your identity.  Do you understand and agree to continue? Yes [Y]

She likes country music because it has a story to tell and she can understand the words. Easy listening and classical both for background music when I am doing something else like driving or cleaning house so you could carry on a conversation. Dislike rap because she doesn't like the content and understand the words that are being said.
crime and police
Now we want to ask you some questions about crime and the police.   "Is there any area right around your neighborhood – that is, within a mile – where you would be afraid to walk alone at night?" No [N]

Now we would like to ask you some questions about the police in your area, that is, within the city or town in which you live.  All of the questions ask you how often things happen, and we ask that you answer on a scale from never to very often.  The choices are never, on occasion, fairly often, or very often.

"How often do you think police officers stop people without good reason—never, on occasion, fairly often, or very often?"on occasion [A2]
"How often do you think police officers use insulting languagewhen talking to people they stop?on occasion [A2]
"When police officers use force against people, how often do you think they use excessive force (in other words, more force than is necessary under the circumstances)?never [A1]
"How common do you think corruption (such as taking bribes, involvement in the drug trade) is among the police?"on occasion [A2]
Now we would like to ask you about sentencing reform. How much do you agree or disagree with the following policy proposition:  "We should mandate misdemeanors instead of felonies for non-serious, nonviolent crimes, unless the defendant has prior convictions for murder, rape, certain sex offenses or certain gun crimes"  Do you strongly agree, agree, are you neutral, or do you disagree, or strongly disagree. neutral [2]
Homeless
Now we want to ask you some questions about homelessness
We know that some people in our communities are homeless. How serious a problem do you think this is in the community where you live?  Would you say it is very serious, somewhat serious, or not at all serious? Not at all serious [A4]
Do you think problems in the area of homelessness result more from the government not doing enough or people relying too much on government? people relying too much on government [A2]
Looking to the future, who do you want to see take primary responsibility for reducing homelessness – the government, business, community service organizations, or individuals and their families? community service organizations [A3]
In the past 12 months how often have you personally seen a homeless person on the street?  Would that be more than once a week, once a week, once a month, at least 2-3 times per year, once a year, or not at all in the last year? once a week [2]
In the past 12 months how often have you had a face to face interaction with a homeless person?  Would that be more than once a week, once a week, once a month, at least 2-3 times per year, once a year, or not at all in the last year? at least 2-3 times a year [11]
In general, how do you feel about your interaction with the homeless?  Do you like it very much, like it, neutral, dislike it, or dislike it very much? Dislike it very much [A5]
Homelessness is a public issue, and people have all sorts of beliefs about homelessness. We would like to hear you elaborate about your opinions regarding homelessness. Please speak freely.

[Interviewer: The call is recorded. You do not need to type anything in the box. Please remember "validate, empathy, probe" Here's some good follow up questions: tell me a story about your encounter with a homeless person, do you give money to pan handlers, what does homelessness look like, why does it happen, how to solve it, can i get your reaction to the latest news story about homelessness, etc.]
She believes that many of the homeless do not seek out help from organizations that are willing to help. Most homeless people have mental issues or have addiction. There are enough programs to help out but many chose not to. Real homeless people deserve care from community from faith based programs such as a rescue mission. It is hard to discern between truely needy people and people who are just out for money. It increases the level of distrust. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter are faith based holidays and she sees giving as seasonal because people can go back to their faith based roots and give based on that.
inequality
Now we want to ask you a few questions about economic inequality, that is, the gap between the rich and poor in America today.  Please tell us if you strongly agree, agree, are neutral, disagree or strongly disagree.  Here's the first statement:  Inequality continues to exist because it benefits the rich and powerful. strongly disagree [4]
In a free society, it is all right if a few people accumulate a lot of wealth and property while many others live in poverty strongly agree [0]
Inequality continues to exist because ordinary people don't join together to get rid of it. strongly disagree [4]
The economic system in the U.S. is fair and provides everyone equal opportunity to succeed. agree [1]
Economic inequality is a public issue, and people have all sorts of beliefs about inequality. We would like to hear you elaborate about your opinions regarding inequality in America today. Please speak freely.  (Interviewer  do not type their answer in the box -- the call is being recorded.  Ask them to elaborate on the  previous two answers. Use validate/empathy/probe.  Ask them why some people are poor and others are rich.  Ask them what are the consequences of the gap between rich and poor.  Ask them how government should respond to inequality. We are a society based on free enterprize. People that take risks should be rewarded and people who do make money are taxed heavily and it takes the money and gives it to those who are not working. Money is taken away which could lead them to expansion and build up their company to provide more jobs.
poverty
Now we want to ask you some questions about government support for the poor.   For each of the following statements, please tell me whether you strongly agree, agree, disagree, or strongly disagree with it.  Here's the first statement: Do you think that welfare makes people work less than if there wasn't a welfare system? strongly agree [0]
Do you think that food stamps (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program -- SNAP)  makes people work less than if there wasn't food stamps? strongly agree [0]
Please indicate whether you would like to see more or less government spending regarding hunger, such as nutrition programs for poor children and families, food stamps, and school lunches. Remember that if you say "much more", it might require a tax increase to pay for it.  Would you spend much more, spend more, spend about the same, spend less, or spend much less. SPEND LESS [4]
