So the article I read was called Gangstas, Thugs, and Hustlas: Identity and the Code of the Street in Rap Music by Chris E. Kubrick. This article tries to find a correlation between rap music, adolescents and their behavior. The findings were that rap music does not cause violence among the black youth but simply shows it's another representation of violence in the American culture of today, just as that of violent video games, sports and movies. Gangsta rap is more or less real life scenarios put into lyrics. It's trying to prove an understanding of the street life and it's violence. How the underclass or the ghetto live life by the code. Main aspects of this code are respect, willingness to use violence, material wealth, violent retaliation, objectification of women and finally nihilism. Study was conducted on a sample of 403 songs from the years of 1992-2000 before it became highly commercialized. Where all aspects of the code showed a percentage of 70% or higher in the use of Rap songs.
That's actually pretty crazy because i thought certain music influenced people to engage in certain acts. For example, when i was in high school i noticed that people would engage in certain activities due to the fact that the music they listened to would condone the acts.
